Traces of various veterinary residues have been reported in honey from time to time and the commodity is frequently tested by retailers and the authorities for these compounds because of this. As there are no legal limits (MRLs) for antibiotics in honey in the UK or EU a ‘zero tolerance’ must be applied thus no detectable residues are permitted. Tests commonly performed on honey to check for absence include:
- Chloramphenicol
- Streptomycin
- Sulfonamides
- Tetracyclines
- Nitrofuran metabolites
- Macrolides & trimethoprim
- Fluoroquinolones
- Nitroimidazoles
See our UKAS Schedule of Accreditation for details of the specific residues included in each test.
